C19 - Ensure rational and appropriate use of PPE

ENSURE RATIONAL AND APPROPRIATE USE OF PPE

PPE should be used in combination with administrative and engineering controls. The indications for PPE should be based on the setting, target audience, risk of exposure (e.g. type of activity) and the transmission dynamics of the pathogen (e.g. contact, droplet, or aerosol). The overuse or misuse of PPE will have a further impact on supply shortages. Observing the following recommendations will ensure rational use of PPE:

  • The type of PPE used when caring for COVID-19 patients will vary according to the setting, type of personnel, and activity.
  • Health care workers involved in the direct care of patients should use PPE according to indications.
  • Specifically, for aerosol-generating procedures and support treatments (tracheal intubation, non-invasive ventilation, tracheotomy, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, manual ventilation before intubation, and bronchoscopy) 1 health care workers should use respirators, eye protection, gloves and gowns; aprons should also be used if gowns are not fluid resistant.
  • Among the general public, persons with symptoms suggestive of COVID-19 or those caring for COVID-19 patients at home should receive medical masks and instructions on their use. For additional information, see Home care for patients with COVID-19 presenting with mild symptoms and management of their contacts.
  • For additional information, see Advice on the use of masks in the community, during home care, and in health care settings in the context of COVID-19.
